When Danny and Chase Akin toured a historic building on Main Street in Mead, Colorado, they saw more than an empty space, they saw potential. “I walked through the front door and saw the bar, and I just fell in love. It was exactly what we were looking for,” Danny recalled.

That potential became Highlandlake Brewing Co., a brewery designed with community and character in mind. Rather than replicate the rugged, sticker-covered feel of many taprooms, the Akins had a different vision for the space. “We thought, let’s do something people can be proud of.” They wanted a place that locals could show to visitors, “You live in Mead, you say, hey, you know what? We actually have a cool place we can take you,” Danny explained.

The result is a welcoming, family- and dog-friendly gathering space offering pool tables, darts, and of course, a rotating lineup of quality craft beers. “We wanted to create a community gathering spot. Somewhere that everyone can come and everyone’s welcome,” said Chase.

Highlandlake Brewing Co. has quickly become a hub in Mead, thanks in part to the strong local support. “So many people have told me, ‘we’re so happy you’re here’,” Danny shared. The town’s leadership played a key role, too. When asked for advice he’d give others looking to open a business, he commented, “Go directly to the town of Mead. From the front desk to the upstairs offices, they are super helpful.”

From its prime location on Main Street to its inclusive atmosphere, Highlandlake Brewing Co. is more than just a brewery, it’s a reflection of Mead’s growth and community spirit. As Chase puts it, “We love the town of Mead. Great people, great location.”
